"The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia) and the joints of the body …. The treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and the joints … by manipulation …. to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or pain relief."

Massage therapy has an effect on the whole body. The manipulation of soft tissues has therapeutic impact on the muscular, nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems of the body.
