Andrea Bartels - Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner (RNCP)

photo of Andrea Andrea Bartels, BA, R.N.C.P. is an Ottawa-based Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner with more than 12 years of combined experience in nutrition and environmental studies. She enjoys sharing her passions for food, nutrition and health as a practicing nutritionist, writer, teacher and lecturer.

Andrea completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography from Carleton University in 1996. Having a special interest in spatial patterns of disease, Andrea took every opportunity to study the relationship between disease and lifestyle in specific geographic areas. These studies motivated her further to study correlations between nutrition and disease, so she moved to Toronto to attend the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. In 1999, Andrea graduated with a Diploma in Applied Holistic Nutrition, and returned to her hometown of Ottawa to gain experience as a nutritional consultant.

Andrea has acquired more than 6 combined years of professional experience working for natural food and vitamin retailers, and within clinical environments. After careful analysis of a client's needs and lifestyle, she produces dietary modifications suited to his/her health goals. Andrea's counseling successes include, but are not limited to: digestive problems, yeast problems, weight management, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, pain and other inflammatory conditions. Andrea's holistic nutrition philosophy includes an understanding that we are not just what we eat, but what we absorb. She emphasizes the importance of a clean diet and lifestyle that minimizes stressors and improves resistance to stressors in our daily lives.

Andrea shares her passion for nutrition and the environment with students enrolled at the Ottawa branch of the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, where she has been teaching curriculum courses on a part-time basis since 2001. She also presents health and nutrition-related workshops regularly to public and private organizations. Andrea enjoys learning and frequently attends professional seminars to remain on the cutting edge of the nutrition field.

Holistic Nutrition Philosophy

What makes the philosophy of Holistic Nutrition unique? Currently, each of us has different nutritional needs, based on genetic, life-stage and lifestyle differences.

The following beliefs form the foundation of my philosophy.

Fact:

Each of us is biochemically individual.

  • For example, smokers have a higher degree of physiological stress, and require more vitamin C than a non-smoker who has the same diet and lifestyle practices.

Fact:

There is no single ideal diet that will keep you well from birth until death. Nutritional needs change according to growth stage, activity levels and health status. As stress increases, so do our nutritional needs. Stress can come from mental/emotional/spiritual, chemical/nutritional/ environmental, structural/physical, or electro-magnetic factors.

  • A woman requires more dietary protein during pregnancy than she did beforehand to support the growth of the new life growing rapidly within her.

Fact:

We are not just what we eat, but what we absorb. Efficient digestion is central to health. So is our ability to dismantle the toxins we absorb through food, water and air.

  • Certain food preservatives interfere with the absorption of vitamins, whereas some promote the formation of carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) if certain dietary nutrients are lacking.

Fact:

Supplementation of a nutritionally inadequate diet with extra amounts of nutrients may be necessary to achieve wellness. This is largely due to modern agricultural practices and food processing, particulars that are important determinants of food quality.

  • What touches the skin, goes in. This is why topical hormone patches and creams are so effective. Meanwhile, the absorption of dietary nutrients depends largely on adequate availability and function of enzymes and other specialized digestive secretions.

Fact:

Food QUALITY is more important than food quantity. Many of us are overfed yet undernourished. Food needs to be fresh, clean and uncontaminated.

  • The soil in which most food is grown is incompletely nourished; that is, North American soils are widely deficient in important trace minerals such as zinc, selenium and chromium. Nutritional supplementation of these hard-to-get nutrients ensures that the body stays in balance. Just because a person eats the number of servings recommended by the Food Guide does NOT ensure he/she is well-nourished. It's not how many selections of grains and cereals you choose that's so important; rather, it's the difference between white rice and brown rice that decides a person's nutritional status.

Fact:

Everything we take in -- be it food or information -- needs to be fully digested if we are to be well. This means that emotional and spiritual health is a vital part of achieving optimum health.

  • The thoughts you feed yourself can have a positive or negative impact on your physical well-being.

What is BIA Testing?

Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis: the measurement of the body's ability to conduct an electrical current. When used correctly, BIA is a convenient and highly accurate measurement of body composition.

What does the test measure?

BIA measures body composition: the ratio of fat-containing mass:lean (non-fat) mass, as well as fluid levels within and outside of cells. Fat mass includes all fat contained within muscle and organ systems, while lean mass includes everything non-fat, including muscle tissue and bone. Equally important, BIA measures the ratio of intracellular water: extracellular water is an important reflection of the body's current ability to absorb and utilize nutrients and expel cellular wastes.

Is this similar to a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation?

Research has shown that body composition correlates directly to level of health. Meanwhile, Body Mass Index calculations of height and weight offer no insight whatsoever on the tissue and fluid compartments comprising an individual.

How can I benefit from a BIA reading?

Since its purpose is to assess and improve function, the BIA test can assist healthy patients in maintaining the healthy ratios of body tissue and fluid necessary for optimal function, productivity, immunity, physical performance and longevity. For patients with sub-optimal health, unhealthy ratios of fat, lean mass and cellular water ratios correlate with increased risk of disease and accelerated aging. Once your body composition has been measured, specific lifestyle modifications can be implemented to elevate levels of lean mass and improve cellular water distribution.

How is the test performed?

The subject assumes a lying down, face- up position. Four adhesive sensor pads are placed on the test subject: 2 on the back of the subject's right wrist and two on his/her ankle. A sensor cable connects the sensor pads to the Analyzer device and enables the Analyzer to generate a harmless, low-level electrical current which flows through the body. Within 10 seconds, the Analyzer has measured the ability of the tissues' response to the current. For example, fat will block the current while muscle will allow it to travel back more quickly to the machine.
